What is Myofascial Scraping?
By: Hannah Burnett, Andy Park DC, DNSP
Having trouble finding relief or quick solutions to persistent problems such as tension headaches, muscle soreness, or neck/back pain? We provide and practice many different treatment options here at Northcenter Healthcare including myofascial scraping. This practice, often referred to as the Graston Technique or IASTM, targets the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments) to decrease tension and promote blood flow in those “stuck” areas. After just minutes of this scraping, any pain or discomfort that was troubling you before will be alleviated as the body begins to heal.
What is IASTM?
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a specialized manual therapy technique that involves the use of handheld instruments to diagnose and treat soft tissue dysfunctions3. This process is non-invasive and uses ergonomically designed tools with smooth edges to repeatedly scrape over the skin and put pressure on the target areas of discomfort. The primary goal of IASTM is to mobilize any scar tissue/adhesions that are causing pain or restricting mobility while stimulating tissue regeneration and healing.
Don’t be intimidated by the use of the word “scraping” during this process. The pressure from the tool won’t tear at the skin because it’s designed to glide and will move smoothly with the CBD muscle cream the practitioner applies beforehand. The process should not cause any real pain, and the most you can expect is some mild, temporary discomfort as the muscle tissues are being moved and worked through. As a result of this technique, it is common to have slight redness of the skin as well as some light bruising marks. These results are not harmful and resolve quickly, so there is no need to be concerned if they arise.
How will I Benefit?
As mentioned previously, our practice offers this service during patient appointments (typically in conjunction with a chiropractic adjustment, movement practices, rehabilitation exercises, etc). The benefits of having this technique performed (during an appointment) include4:
Reduction in pain and discomfort as it breaks down myofascial restrictions and lessens the pressure on nerves and surrounding tissues.
Enhanced range of motion and increased flexibility in tissues and joints. Overall it improves one’s movement quality (whether they are an athlete or just active day-to-day).
Accelerated healing of the soft tissues as the area is localized and stimulated into repair (this also extends to faster recovery after injury/surgery).
Improved tissue function as the muscles are restored in length and tension. They will also move more efficiently as any muscular imbalances or movements are corrected.
Reduced swelling and inflammation of the “problem areas” as circulation is increased. This also helps to manage chronic conditions as well.
Is IASTM right for me?
There are many different conditions that can be treated using myofascial scraping, and you don’t have to be a full-time athlete to benefit. Of course, athletes and active individuals are the first people who come to mind when recommending solutions such as IASTM. Additionally, those dealing with chronic pain, post-surgery, or are in the rehabilitation process often receive this treatment. That being said, even individuals with acute injuries or those who sit working in an office all day may find that myofascial scraping could help them.
Common problems that would benefit from IASTM include3:
Headaches/neck pain
Back pain
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Shin splints
Shoulder pain
Sciatica
Foot pain/plantar fasciitis
Knee pain
Tennis elbow and other soft tissue injuries
Finding the right treatment solutions for your needs shouldn’t have to be stressful. Northcenter Healthcare offers many options, and myofascial scraping may be something you would feel comfortable trying after learning more about the process. This holistic approach to managing pain could provide many benefits and improve the results of your entire chiropractic appointment. If you are curious about IASTM or have questions, feel free to bring it up at your next appointment!
