What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling a Tight Upper Trapezius.

A new way to reduce pain, release tension, and restore movement.

At Northcenter Healthcare, we’re always looking for ways to help our patients move better, recover faster, and stay active. That’s why we’re excited to announce that Dr. Main is now offering dry needling as part of our integrated treatment approach

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is an evidence-based technique used to release trigger points, otherwise known as “muscle knots”. These are tight, overactive areas within a muscle that can cause pain and restrict movement. Using a thin, sterile filament needle, we target these specific trigger points to create a quick “reset” or “muscle twitch” in the muscle, helping it relax and function more efficiently.

How can it help?

Dry needling can be an effective addition to help treat:

·      Muscle tension or tightness

·      Headaches or neck pain

·      Sports or overuse injuries

·      Limited mobility or general stiffness

Patients can often notice immediate improvements in muscle tension, movement quality, and pain levels.

How is it different from Acupuncture?

While acupuncture and dry needling may look similar at first sight, their goals differ slightly.

Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and focuses on restoring balance and promoting overall well-being by stimulating specific acupoints along meridians. This approach considers not only physical conditions but also mental and emotional aspects.

Dry needling, on the other hand, is a modern, evidence-based technique developed within Western medicine. It targets specific muscle trigger points to relieve pain, improve mobility and restore normal movement patterns.

Both techniques utilize thin, sterile needles and can complement one another, but dry needling is focused on musculoskeletal function, making it an effective addition to our movement-based chiropractic care approach.

How we use it

At Northcenter Healthcare, dry needling isn’t a standalone treatment. It is part of a movement-based, active care approach. We combine dry needling with chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue therapy, and exercise-based rehab to address the root cause of pain and build long-term resilience.

Whether you’re dealing with nagging pain or tension, recovering from an injury, or looking to perform at your best, dry needling can help you move and feel better, quicker.
